Children's Home

Jardín del Edén
Ecuador - South America
Day by day millions of children fight for survival in the streets.
Our JARDIN DEL EDEN works hard to build a future for some of them.

How our home came into being
What counts are acts , not words
Our little home in the highlands of Ecuador came into being in 1989 through the private initiative by two Ecuadorian students, Roberto Altamirano and Anita Constante. Roberto paid regular weekend-visits to prisoners in several jails in Ecuador. It was on one of these visits that he came to realize the miserable situation of some children who had no choice but to live in jail with their condemned fathers. They had no other home !

Seven of them shared one little cell where they slept on the cold floor (which was covered with nothing but newspapers) sharing what little food they were offered and participating in the daily prison drills. Their social neglect became more and more obvious, but nobody would offer a solution. Roberto  - deeply moved by the children's situation and by the words of one of the prisoners: " Nice of you to come visiting and talking. But you are like all the others: you're just talking, but you don't act! Do something! " - Roberto decided to dedicate his life to these children.

A short time later he and his wife Anita founded JARDIN DEL EDEN. Although confronted with severe financial problems Roberto and Anita managed to salvage 15 children from their daily struggle to survive and to offer them a makeshift home in a former henhouse.

Who lives in JARDIN DEL EDEN ?
Besides the prisoners' children many "social orphans" have found a new home in recent years.

JARDIN DEL EDEN hosts:
 - children mistreated by their parents
 - children who used to work and live in the streets
 - children who were forced to live with their imprisoned parents
 - children whose parents were unable to supply them

JARDIN DEL EDEN provides:
 - shelter
 - food
 - medical care
 - schooling and professional training
 - a feeling of security in a new family

Future Prospects

WHAT WE MANAGED TO ACHIEVE IN THE PAST FEW YEARS.
JARDIN DEL EDEN's aim is it to provide sufficient supplies for the children and the youths ( for the time being) and to offer promising future prospects in the long run.

Only by many people's overwhelming readiness in Germany to offer their help has it been possible to promote and support our children's home.

FUTURE PROSPECTS

Our maintenance....

is mainly provided for by spontaneous private donations and contributions in Ecuador and in Germany. In order to be able to take in more children the persons in charge of JARDIN DEL EDEN are working hard on finding a charity organization willing to give a fixed annual amount of money.

Taking in more children and youths....
If we mange to add accommodation unit No. 4 we can host more children. Thus our objective - namely to take care of 65 children and youths - could be realized. This, however, requires guaranteed financial support of the maintenance-costs of our home, at least for the next couple of years to come.

Further professional training.....
After the successful start of our carpentry workshop further professional training facilities ought to be offered. In the long run we plan to establish a garment factory unit with sewing machines, a metalworking shop, and a computer room.

How can you help ?
The main part of our costs is covered by private donations and contributions. Although we are accustomed to money-efficiency we need US$ 80,-- per month for the support of  one child.
